2 LeT militants killed in encounter in Sopore

Sopore, May 30: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed on Thursday in an encounter with security forces in the Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police said.

“On a credible input, a cordon and search operation was launched by the security forces in the Bunpora are of Dangerpora, Sopore. During the operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated, leading to an encounter,” a police spokesperson said.

In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and their bodies retrieved from the site, the official said.

The slain militants were identified as Nasser Ahmed Mir, son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir, resident of Brath, and Asif Ahmed War, son of Ghulam Mohammad War, resident of Warpora Sopore, SP Sopore Javeed Iqbal said.

War had joined LeT in February this year while , Mir had joined LeT in November 2017.

Speaking to ‘Kashmir Images’, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Javaid Iqbal said two AK-47 rifles and six magazines were recovered from their possession .

Keeping in view of law and order situation, authorities also suspended Internet services in the Sopore and Handwara areas while all educational institutions remained shut in Sopore and outskirts on the orders of district magistrate.

A police spokesman urged the people to not venture inside the encounter zone, saying such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” he said.
