Sweepers’ strike affects garbage lifting service in Sopore

Sopore, May 20: Municipal Council (MC) Sopore consolidated sweepers on Monday said that they will call off their strike only after receiving an assurance from the government that their services will be regularized.

They also demanded that a probe should be conduct against “illegal” appointments in MC Sopore.

According to reports, consolidated sweepers staged a protest outside MC Office Sopore and demand regularization of their services. They also demanded a thorough probe against the employees, who they say have been appointed illegally.

“We are on strike since last ten days and no one is listening to us. We will not call off the strike till we are regularized,” said Reyaz Ahmad a sweeper.

“We demand an impartial probe against those employees who have been illegally appointed. They are enjoying different perks without proper confirmation order from Directorate office.

Locals told Kashmir Images that the strike of sweepers has created a mess in Sopore town where heaps of garbage can be seen along roadside everywhere. From past three days, no garbage was lifted from the designated points due to the ongoing strike.

When contacted Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, Ashiq Hussain Lilly, said: “Let the sweepers visit my office so that I can listen to their issues.”
