Kupwara, Apr 11: One person died and three others injured as protestors attacked security forces with stones after the polling in Handwara area of Kupwara district of north Kashmir Thursday.

Protests broke out in Mandigam area of Handwara in the north Kashmir district after polling for the first phase of parliamentary polls ended, officials said.

They said the protesters pelted stones on the polling staff returning from election duty.

The security forces accompanying the election staff used force on the protesters and four persons were injured in the action, they said.

The injured were taken to a hospital where one of them succumbed, a police official said. He identified the deceased as a teenaged boy, Owais Mir, a resident of Mandigam.

Confirming the killing, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Handwara said that the teen was brought to the facility for treatment.

“He had suffered multiple pellet injuries and was declared dead on arrival at the facility,” he said.

Officials said stone-pelting incidents have been reported from a few other places immediately after the polling ended.

Some security force personnel and polling staff have been injured, the officials said, adding details were awaited.
