Srinagar, Mar 29: Two militants were killed in an encounter with government forces in Nowgam area of Srinagar on Friday morning, police said.

Government forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Sutsoo Kalan area of Chattergam (Nowgam) following information about presence of militants there, a police official said.

He said the two militants were killed in the ensuing encounter whose bodies were later retrieved from the site.

From the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter, it is understood that both the killed militants are Pakistani nationals identified as Ali and Idrees, police spokesman said.

As per the police records, both the killed militants were affiliated with JeM outfit and were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of militancy incidents including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities. “They were involved in conspiring and executing many attacks in the area. Several cases were registered against them,” spokesman said.

Arms & ammunition including rifles were recovered from the site of encounter.

“All the incriminating materials including rifles and ammunition have been taken in the case records for further investigation. Police has registered a case in this regard.”

Spokesman once again requested the citizens to not venture inside the encounter zone saying such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off all the explosives materials if any.”
