Friday prayers barred at Jama Masjid

Srinagar, Mar 22: The authorities on Friday once again barred the Friday congregational prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar downtown.

Reports said that the authorities had put in place strict restrictions at many place in downtown.

An official said restrictions were imposed in view of call for protests issued by the separatists.

Joint Resistance Leadership had called for “peaceful protests” after the prayers against the custodial death of Awantipora school teacher Rizwan Pandith.

Hurriyat-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who delivers Friday sermon at the mosque was put under house-arrest.

“While repression, killings and arbitrary arrests continue unabated, for the 3rd time this month #JamaMasjid put under lockdown and Friday prayers disallowed. Condemn the authorities for this religious assault,” Mirwaiz wrote on Twitter.
