Stray horses irk locals in Ganderbal

Ganderbal, Feb 25: Hundreds of stray horses have created nuisance in various parts of Ganderbal, while as authorities seem to be in deep slumber.

Locals told Kashmir Images that stray horses are obstructing the traffic in Ganderbal and held them responsible for causing road accidents.

An aggrieved farmer said, “Horses are been abandoned by their owners in winters and they can be seen roaming around everywhere. These horses damage our crops. Nobody from authorities is taking any steps to solve the issue.”

Animal rights activists also expressed their concern over abandoning of horses. “Owners of such horses abandon them during non-productive season because they don’t want to spend money on their fodder. The owners should be held responsible for this. They should be booked for doing so,” said an animal rights activist.

When contact Animal Husbandry officer Ganderbal said, “We have issued a general notice to the owners advising them to not abdomen horses in winter. We are working on an action plan to stop the menace.”

“Municipal Committee Ganderbal used to have stables for the horses but now it is unable to afford the cost of fodder,” he added.
