Srinagar police arrests 9 gamblers

January 25: Police on Friday claimed to have arrested five persons after receiving a credible input about gambling activities in Check Bagh behind NIT in Srinagar.

According to a police statement, the persons arrested for gambling offences were identified as Manzoor Ahmad son of Ali Mohammad resident of Saida Kadal, Nisar Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Mohammad resident of Dargah, Mohammad Ayoub son of Mohammad Shaban resident of Hazratbal, Afroz Ahmad son of Ali Mohammad resident of Zakoora and Ghulam Nabi son of Ghulam Mohammad resident of Hazratbal.

“Officers from the local police unit while making the arrests have also seized playing cards and stake money of 6,300 from the gamblers,” reads the police statement adding a case under relevant sections of law stands registered at Police Station Nigeen.

The police statement further said: “Police has resolved to deal firmly with anti-social elements. Continuous police action against the gamblers in Srinagar should encourage the community members to come forward with any information pertaining to social crimes in their neighbourhood.”

“We reassure the community members that our efforts in curbing social crimes shall continue,” it added.
