Srinagar, Jan 17: Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, has expressing his satisfaction over the release of Mushtaq-UL-Islaam and hoped that the release of other political prisoners are released and never touched unless they are given fair trials as per to international standards.

In a press release issued here, Sehrai said that the unconditional release of prisoners, fair trials for political prisoners was a long pending demand and that the groundless persecution which he termed as ‘politically motivated’ needed to end.

“We would like to hope that the release of Mushtaq-UL-Islaam will be the first step towards improving the prisoners and human rights situation. If those in power are serious and sincere and there is really a change of heart and approach then all political prisoners should be immediately released from jails and their freedom restored.”Sehrai was quoted as saying by the press release.

Sehrai further added that hundreds of Kashmiris were languishing in jails across India for their political ideology and beliefs and were even subjected to ill-treatment which, he added, must end. “The draconian law, Public Safety Act, is invoked against the detainees on flimsy and baseless grounds at the will and whims of the authorities as and when they desire to keep them continuously in lockup,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sehrai also condemned the ‘mental and physical torture’ of Ab Majeed Parray and Shahbaz Ahmed Mir of Hajin in police custody. He said that severely thrashing of jail inmates was not only unacceptable but against the basic principles of humanity.
