Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the evening near the Srinagar-Bandipora road in Mujgund area on the city’s outskirts, a police official said.

As the forces were conducting searches, the militants fired upon them, he said.

The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter, the official said.

Some sources said that one trooper of 5 RR, two cops of JK Police and a CRPF personnel were injured during the gunfight.

“Three hiding militants were also killed in the encounter,” sources said.

Sources said that two of the slain militants were locals while one was a foreigner.

However, the bodies were not recovered when this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out between protesters and the government forces near the site of a gunfight in Mujgund area.

Reports said that people, mostly youth, took to streets as soon as the news of the gunfight spread in the area.

They said that announcements were made over the public address systems of the mosques asking youth to stage protests.

An eye witness said that youth pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the anti-militant operation. He said the forces responded by firing tear gas shells.

Meanwhile, the exchange of fire was on between the militants trapped in a house and the forces when last reports came.
