Sopore, Dec 06: It has been almost fourteen years since Public Health Engineering (PHE) department Sopore abandoned a 1.50 lac liter water tank located on the Tehsil road here.

According to locals, the water tank, which was constructed more than a decade ago by the State government, would supply water to many areas of the town including Arampora, Mahrajpora, Chinkipora, Neharpora but after 2005 the water tank was abandoned by the PHE Department.

One of the residents of Sopore town, Mohammad Ismail Bhat, said: “Following the earthquake in 2005, the water tank developed cracks after which the concerned authorities never attempted to repair it to make it functional again.”

“We have knocked the doors of concerned department several times requesting them to ensure restoration of water tank but to no avail,” he added.

Speaking to Kashmir Images, Assistant Executive Engineer PHE Division Sopore, Abdul Rashid Bukhari, said: “Yes it is true that the water tank is not functional since more than a decade. In order to end water crises in the town, PHE department has forwarded a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to government for the construction of four water tanks in the town which include the one which is located on the Tehsil road.”

“Once the DPR is approved, which is under consideration at higher level, our department will prepare its machinery for the construction of water tanks in the town,” he said.
