World Soil Day observed in Shopian, Pulwama

SHOPIAN, DECEMBER 05:  A day-long event to celebrate World Soil Heath Day was organized by the Agriculture Department Shopian in Collaboration with KVK Shopian at Mini Secretariat Shopian.

On the occasion, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Shopian Dr Majid Jahangir who was the chief guest said that the aim of the World Soil Day is to make people aware about the protection and proper usage of the land.

He stressed upon the Agriculture Department and Scientist from KVK Shopian to prepare the Soil Fertility Map of the District which can play a vital role in the overall sustainable development of the district.

He said that not only the department but the people also have the responsibility for conserving the health of the soil. He also raised the issue of unabated use of pesticides which has led to percolation of same into the soil.

`Meanwhile Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer Shopian Farooq Ahmad Reshi stressed upon the judicious use of Fertilizers with more emphasis on the use of organic Fertilizers, Micro-Nutrients, Bio-Fertilizers and Neem based urea as per the soil health card issued by the department to the farmers for sustainable development of Soil by stopping the dominance of chemicals in today’s agriculture.

Scientists from KVK Shopian Dr Tariq Rasool, Dr Mumtaz Ahmad and others also spoke on the occasion and interacted with Agriculture Department officials and Farmers and gave valuable suggestions for improving the soil health by adopting latest technology of Organic fertilizers.

The training cum awareness programme was attended by the Officers of the Agriculture Department, KVK Shopian and hundreds of farmers from different areas of the district and other concerned.

Meanwhile, Department of Agriculture Pulwama in collaboration with Sky Lark para Medical Institute Pulwama today organized a training-cum-awareness camp at the college premises to observe World Soil Health Day in the district.

During the function, Dr Talat Majid incharge Soil health laboratory trained participant students about soil sampling, soil testing and the scientific ways of preserving the health of the soil.

During the camp, the speakers highlighted the importance of Soil Health and explained the tips of soil testing for better production and gave a detailed know-how to the students about the use of latest scientific technologies to boost the agriculture production.

Besides, concerned officials of the department, large number of students were present on the occasion.
