Yemen govt calls for block of rebel media outlet

Dubai, Nov 29 : Yemen’s internationally recognised government has called for a block on the broadcast of a rebel television channel from the war-torn country, the state news agency reported Wednesday.

Information Minister Moammer al-Eryani said the Huthi-run Al-Masirah television was “generating poisonous sectarianism and inciting violence and hatred”, Saba news agency reported.

He added that Arab satellite operator Nilesat — which is based in Cairo — had stopped broadcasting the rebel outlet.

The Huthi rebels condemned the calls, tweeting a link to a live stream of their Al-Masirah channel.

“Satellite operators are succumbing to pressures by the Saudi-US coalition and blocking the broadcast of Al-Masirah on Nilesat,” the rebel outlet tweeted.

“We will work with all our energy to keep the voice of truth even if it costs us our lives.”

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation in Egypt told AFP it had not ordered the closure of any channels, but the outlet was not visible on Nilesat on Wednesday evening.

Nearly 10,000 people — mostly civilians — have been killed in the Yemen conflict since 2015, when a Saudi-led coalition intervened on the side of the Yemeni government to fight the Huthi rebels.
