Shopian, Nov 22: The electricity supply, which was disrupted by season’s first snowfall, is yet to be fully restored as many areas in Shopian district are facing severe power cuts.

Residents of Shopian district said that despite of requesting the concerned Power Development Department (PDD) several times to restore electricity in the district, there is no improvement in power supply here.  “We are getting power supply for nearly 2 hours out of 24 hours, while as some areas get less than 2 hours of power supply,” they added.

One of the residents here, Advocate Owais Khan, said that people are being deprived of the basic amenities of life. “It’s just for an hour in a day that we get to see electricity here. Some people are switching to other alternatives and are buying solar panels but what about poor people who even can’t afford to buy them,” he added.

When contacted a senior PDD official said that he acknowledges the grievance of people in Shopian district. “Our department is working hard to restore the Tower at Anantnag area and almost 80% of work has been completed and now only electric lines are to be installed on it.”

“It will almost take a week to fully restore the electricity supply in the affected areas,” he added.
