Sopore, Nov 15: Hurriyat-G chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Thursday visited his native Duroo village of Sopore to mourn the death of his eldest son-in-law, Ghulam Hassan Mukhdoomi, 66, who passed away at SKIMS Soura on Tuesday.

Soon after reaching Duroo, Geelani was warmly welcomed by hundreds of people here.

Hurriyat-G sources said that Thursday afternoon authorities told Geelani, who has been under continued house detention for years now, that he and his wife could visit Duroo.

At Duroo, addressing the mourners Geelani said that death keeps no calendar and urged them to read “Quran and Tafheem-ul-Quran”.

“Today, after a gap of eight years I was allowed to visit Duroo by the state administration which does not allow me to meet people. I am even being barred from offering congregational Friday and Eid prayers,” said Geelani.

Paying tributes to his son-in-law, Geelani said that after he had fallen ill “I was never able to see him because of my house detention.

“Few days ago, I was taken to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar for a medical checkup and there I got an opportunity to meet my son-in-law, who was on death bed. It was really heartbreaking for me that he was not able to talk,” he said.

Geelani also reiterated his demand for self-determination and said that despite continuous oppression, “the youth are sacrificing their lives to end Indian occupation here.”

Geelani also met family his bereaved daughter and other members of Makhdoomi’s family and left Duroo around 4:30 amid pro-freedom slogans by his supporters and other people who had assembled there.
