A police official said that joint forces launched search operation in Dar-Ganiegund village after receiving credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area following which door to door searches were conducted.

During the searches, the holed up militant fired at the forces triggering a gunfight.

Locals told Kashmir Images that gunshots were heard in the village at around 11:30 on Friday morning which lasted till evening hours.

“A house was damaged after it caught fire during the encounter,” they added.

A police official in Pulwama said, “One militant was killed in the gunfight who is believed to be a foreigner affiliated with Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit and one police man received splinter injuries who is said to be stable now.”

The policeman injured in the encounter was identified as Zail Singh.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman, in a statement issued today confirmed the killing of a JeM militant in the encounter.

“In the ensuing encounter, one terrorist was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. From the incriminating materials recovered, it is learnt that the killed terrorist is a Pakistani codenamed as Anwar who was affiliated with proscribed terror outfit JeM. He was involved in attacks on security establishments and other civilian atrocities in the area,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman also confirmed that one policeman also sustained injuries, however, added that he is stated to be stable.
