Don’t disclose identity of Juvenile in conflict with law: JJB to Media

BARAMULLA, NOVEMBER 03: Principal Magistrate Juvenile Justice Board Baramulla Fayaz Ahmad Qureshi has issued the directions to the print and electronic media working in its jurisdiction not to disclose the identity of Juvenile in conflict with law and under inquiry in any form including newspaper, magazine, news-sheet or visual media in violation of statutory norms.

While pronouncing the judgment against a prominent national channel for disclosing the identity, the Board observed that revealing identity of a Juvenile in conflict with the law and under inquiry exposes them to moral, physical and psychological danger.

Meanwhile, the said order has been issued under section 22 of the Jammu and Kashmir Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2013 which prohibits the publication of name, address, school or any other particular leading to the identification of any Juvenile in conflict with law and under enquiry in any form including newspaper and other forms of publications.

Moreover, the board observed that disclosing identity not only violates the provisions of the Act but also the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and High courts.
