Two militants killed in shootout in Baramulla

Baramulla, Oct 19: Two unidentified militants travelling in a Scorpio vehicle were killed in a brief shootout at Karlhar crossing near railway station in the outskirts of Baramulla town, Friday afternoon.

Addressing media persons at a hurriedly-called press briefing, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain Mir said, “ Around 1:30, militants travelling in Scorpio vehicle bearing registration number JK01 L- 5792   were signalled to stop at a ‘Naka’ (checkpoint)  near Kralhar.”

He said the militants opened fire on the ‘naka’ party. In retaliation, both the militants were killed, he said.

“An AK series rife, magazine, UBGL, two Chinese pistols, six magazines, three grenades and two UBGL grenades were recovered from the possession of slain militants,” said the SSP.

He said the slain militants belong to Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit and were Pakistanis.

“They slain duo was identified as Faizan and Wahab from Pakistan,” SSP informed.

He said a case (FIR no 176/2008) was registered at Police Station Baramulla and further investigation taken up.

Earlier in the day, Army claimed to have killed three unidentified militants during an infiltration bid along the LoC in Uri area of the district yesterday.

A defence spokesman said Friday that army on Thursday foiled the infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla district.

He said troops noticed some suspicious movement along the LoC near Tourna in Boniyar area in the early hours of Thursday and challenged the infiltrators.

The infiltrators opened fire towards the positions of the troops which was retaliated, he said, adding three militants were killed in the gunbattle.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants were not immediately known.

Grenade blast, firing in Pulwama; woman killed

Srinagar, Oct 19: A woman was killed after militants attacked an Army camp in a Pulwama village, Friday evening, police said.

A police official said that militants fired a grenade at the Army camp of 44 RR in Shadimarg village of Pulwma around 7:10 pm. The blast, he said, was followed by intense firing.

The soldiers retaliated the fire, the official said, adding that in the exchange of fire a woman got injured.

The injured woman, identified as Firdousa, daughter of Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh of Qasbayar Shadimarg was taken to Rajpora hopsital and later to District Hospital Pulwama where she succumbed.
