He said in this incident, Constable Saqib Mohiuddin Mir sustained injuries and was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

However, the injured cop succumbed to injuries, the spokesman said.

Though police spokesman didn’t say it, but a police official said militants also decamped with the cop’s rifle.

Saqib Mir, a resident of Zawoora village of the district, was manning the entry gate of the police station when the attack took place around 6:30 am. “Militants also took away his rifle,” the official said.

Police have registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the matter, he said.

Meanwhile, the wreath laying ceremony of the slain cop was held at District Police Lines Shopian later in the day.
