Srinagar, Sep 28: Crime Branch on Friday registered case against an Estates department official for duping gullible people on the pretext of offering them government plots for residential purposes.

“Acting on a complaint, it was found that an official of Estates department projected himself as a member of an NGO involved in arranging plots for the needy people,” a Crime Branch spokesperson said, adding that the accused would induced people to pay money in advance for getting plots for them.

One of the persons had approached the Crime Branch with a complaint that he had paid money to the Estates official but was neither given the residential plot nor was his money returned, the spokesperson said.

He said a probe revealed that the accused along with others had lured the complainant and his relatives into paying Rs. 7.5 lakh for the promised government plot.

A case (FIR no. 44/2018 U/S 420, 468, 471, 120-B RPC) was registered against the accused employee of the Estates department was registered, the spokesperson said.
