Srinagar, September 4: Family and relatives of Ummat-e-Islami (UeI) leader from south Kashmir’s Shopian, Sarjan Barkati who coined novel slogans during 2016 uprising today held protest here demanding his release on humanitarian grounds.

“Yeh Pellet, Bullet Na Bhai Na” (say no to stop firing pellets and bullets) was one of the popular slogans Barkati coined during 2016 uprising and subsequently landed in jail and is yet to be released.

Pertinent to mention Sarjan Barkati was arrested on October 1, 2016 from Wanpoh area after earning the sobriquet of “pied piper and Azadi chacha” during 2016 mass uprising for his speeches and novel sloganeering that attracted large crowds mostly youth.

Barkati’s wife and children who had assembled at Press Enclave holding placards in their hands which read “release Barkati, take pity on us” appealed the Governor administration to release him on humanitarian grounds in view of desperate economic condition of his family.

“Our father being lone source of income must be released, Mummy hardly manages two times food for us while our studies are affected badly even since my father was arrested. I appeal the Governor to ensure his release on humanitarian grounds,” said Sugra daughter of Barkati.

Shabroza, wife of UeI leader said it is difficult for her to meet both ends in absence of her husband who is languishing in jail over the past more than two years.

Shabroza appealed Governor and Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure early release of her husband so that the family does not suffer any more.
