Food business operators booked for violating labelling norms

SRINAGAR, JULY 16: The Legal Metrology Department has booked a milk dairy unit and a bakery shop for violating the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

After receiving a complaint, the Controller, LMD J & K   R. K Katoch had deputed the field executives to different markets and during the inspection, it was found that the curd packages from a milk unit were printed with the advance date of packing which is in violation of Legal Metrology Act,2009. Under the aforesaid Act, every mandatory declaration made on the label should be correct.

The notice was served to the manufacturer for making such a misleading declaration on the label and the management confessed the lapse and gave an undertaking that no such offence shall be repeated in the future. An amount of Rs 20,000/- was slapped on the management for the offence.

In another instance, a bakery shop was penalized at Rs 10,000/= for selling biscuits, cakes, bread etc without any label.
