Youth killed as Army open fire in Kupwara

Baramulla, Jul 11: A youth was killed and another injured in alleged Army firing during clashes in Trehgam area of the north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.

The slain youth was identified as Khalid Gaffar Malik (22), son of Abdul Gaffar Malik, of Zargar Mohalla Trehgam.

Witness said  groups of youth allegedly pelted stones on an Army cavalcade passing through the area and the soldiers opened fire upon them, in which a youth was killed and another was injured.

Both the youths were rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared Malik brought dead. He had suffered bullet injury in his neck.

The killing triggered massive protests in the area.

A police official  while confirming the killing said the situation is tense in the area.

“Situation is tense in the area. We are looking into what actually led to the killing,” the official said.

Meanwhile, in the wake of tension, the administration has decided to suspend class-work in all the schools and colleges of Kupwara district tomorrow, said an official.

He said that class-work will remain suspended in all schools and colleges of Kupwara district tomorrow (July 12) “as a precautionary measure”.
