DDC Pulwama conducts extensive tour of flood-prone areas

PULWAMA, JUNE 30: District Development Commissioner Pulwama Ghulam Mohammad Dar today conducted an extensive tour of the flood-prone areas of the district to take stock of the flood like situation caused by recent rains.

The DDC was accompanied by ADCs Pulwama and Awantipora, ACR, ACD, Executive Engineer Flood Control, Tehsildars, Engineers and other district officers. The team visited Kakapora, Hajibal and Galander where breaches have been reported due to incessant rains to the banks of river Jhelum.

On the occasion, Executive Engineer Flood Control apprised the DDC that the restoration work of the protection bund was started yesterday evening at Gallander but the rising water level and continuous rain hampered the work and today the restoration work has been completed successfully. He directed concerned agency for the construction of concrete bund at the particular stretch as a permanent measure.

While inspecting flood-prone areas, the DDC directed Irrigation and Flood Control to expedite the strengthening work on embankments in these areas so that the situation will remain under control. He stressed concerned departments to remain vigilant in case of any eventually. DDC appealed to people not to panic as District Administration has geared up all the agencies for the safeguard of precious human lives and Property. He said in this regard rehabilitation centres have been established at the Islamic University, Railway station Panzgam, Malangpora and Kakapora.

DDC further said that all essential men and machinery viz dozers, sandbags, boats, divers, swimmers, vehicles, dewatering pumps besides telephone numbers of in-charge officers are ready. He also called for close coordination between the departments to ensure timely rescue and rehabilitation as and when needed. Municipalities were directed to ensure clearance of all drains well in advance in the town to avoid any water blockage due to rains.

During the tour, several deputations from Galandar, Kandizal, Kakapora, Hajibal villages also met the DDC and demanded sandbags, boats, divers, swimmers, dewatering pumps and renovation of river banks. He assured the deputations that their genuine demands will be redressed on priority.
