Two militants killed in Handwara gunfight

Srinagar, Jun 19: Three top Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants, including its operational commander, were killed in an encounter with government forces in Tral area of in Pulwama district of south Kashmir today, police said.

The encounter broke out after government forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Nazneenpora area of Tral following specific intelligence inputs, a police official said.

Earlier, Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid wrote on Twitter, “Encounter going on at Hyena Tral, 3 (three) important JEM Terrorists trapped…”

The police official said the gunfight was going on when last reports came in. Further details were awaited, he added.

An official said the identity of the slain militants was being ascertained.

He also said a CRPF officer and four army-men were injured in the gunfight.

Reports said that the house in which militants were hiding was detonated with explosives by the forces.

Massive clashes also erupted near the site of the gunfight with youth trying to disrupt the anti-militant operation.

Meanwhile, one person was shot at and injured by unknown gunmen in Srigufara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday.

Reports said that Javid Ahmad Waza, a vegetable vendor, was fired upon by the gunmen near Srigufara today.

SSP Altaf Khan said that the man suffered injuries in the incident and was hospitalized, reported GNS news agency.

A case has been registered and further investigation has been initiated, he said.

In the meantime an Army soldier was injured in a mine blast along the LoC in Akhnoor sector.

An anti-personnel mine exploded in the forward belt of Pallan Wala area last evening in which one soldier suffered injuries, Army sources said.

The injured soldier was hospitalised, they said.
