Srinagar, June 6: Casual laborers of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department today held protest here demanding release of four months pending wages.

Chanting slogans against the government for leaving them in dire straits in absence of salary, dozens of casual laborers and ITI workers this afternoon assembled at Press Enclave here and staged demonstrations against the government for withholding their salary.

The protest was organized by PHE Employees Joint Action Committee to impress upon the government to address their issues including that of pending salary.

“Our wages of four months are withheld; authorities have not released a single penny so far thus leaving us and our families in a helpless situation,” said the protestors.

They alleged that the government has no plans to release their four month pending salaries even on upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

The protesters appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Finance Minister, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari to personally look into this issue and ‘save them from starvation’.

They alleged that the Chief Engineer concerned has been intentionally delaying their salaries which otherwise have been released by the Finance Department.

“Is it that authorities do not want us to celebrate Eid? If so, then we will sit on streets along with our families on upcoming Eid as there is no other option left than to confront in a peaceful and democratic manner,” they added.
