Srinagar, June 6: Kashmir University’s South Campus at Anantnag, in collaboration with WWF-India, organised a series of events as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.

The events—including an environment awareness rally in Anantnag town, expert lectures on environment and wildlife and screening of award winning documentaries—were inaugurated by Mohammad Javed Khan, secretary higher education, government of Jammu and Kashmir.

In his presidential remarks, Khan urged the participants to fight the menace of plastic and make full efforts for conservation of environment.

Referring to various environmental issues in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that the ecology of the region is very fragile and “we all need to do our bit to save the unique natural wealth of the state.”

Khan felicitated some eminent wildlife experts of the state including Dr Pankaj Chandan from WWF-India and Intiesar Sohail from Department of Wildlife Protection for their relentless efforts towards environment and wildlife conservation.

In his address, Director South Campus Dr Ashfaq Zarri thanked the chief guest, WWF-India for their support and also underlined the need to hold such programmes every year. The events were coordinated by Dr Bilal Kullo of the Department of Education.

During the film screening event, Bilal Ahmad Dar of Bandipora whose efforts for cleaning of Wular Lake have been recently hailed by the Prime Minister, was also honoured.  After screening of the documentary ‘Saving the Saviour’, Bilal shared his experiences with the audience.
