Srinagar: Militants hurled grenades at an Army camp adjacent to the Hajjan police station in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district tonight, police said.

The militants lobbed the grenades using underbarrel grenade launchers at the camp of the 30 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army around 8.30 PM, they said.

The grenades at the camp were hurled from two sides.

The fire was retaliated “heavily and effectively”, a senior police officer said, adding that it was not a suicide attack.

Earlier reports had suggested that it was a fidayeen attack and militants had entered the camp.

The area has been cordoned off and combing operations have been started, the officer said.

Meanwhile, an army vehicle was damaged in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Yemberzalwai in outskirts of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday.

According to local news agency GNS, confirming the blast, SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal said that the vehicle got partially damaged. “However, no injuries reported so far in the incident.”

“Whole area has been cordoned off and searches have been launched to nab the assailants,” the officer said.

He said that it was the low-intensity IED.

On Monday, a police vehicle was damaged in an IED blast near Wadoora area.

Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit had claimed the responsibility for the Wadoora IED blast in Sopore town on government forces.

Meanwhile, a weapon snatching bid was foiled today in old town Srinagar.

Reports said that some 2 to 3 unidentified masked persons tried to snatch from police personnel guarding the shrine of Mirza Kamil Sahib at Hawal.

However, the policemen fired some shots in the air making the masked men to flee from the scene, reports added.
