Two militants killed in Handwara gunfight

Handwara, May 31: Two militants were killed in an overnight  gunfight in Qaziabad Kralgund  forest area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.

The gunfight erupted when militants opened fire on a patrolling party of Army’s 32 RR late last night in forest area of Qaziabad in Kralgund, an Army  officials said.

“The fire was retaliated triggering a fierce  gunfight in the dense woods of Qaziabad. The exchange of fire continued for some time,” the official said.

He added that the operation was later suspended due to darkness. During search operations on Thursday morning, the bodies of two militants were recovered.

” We have recovered the bodies of two unidentified militants along with as many AK 47 rifles and other war-like stores during the search operation in the area,” the Army officer who was part of operations said.

The identities and the group affiliation of the slain is being ascertained,  he said, adding that it seems that the duo killed in the operation are foreigners.

The combing of the forest area is in progress, he said.

CRPF man injured in axe attack

Srinagar, May 31: A paramilitary CRPF trooper was injured when he was attacked with an axe by unidentified persons with an intention to snatch his rifle in Kulgam district of south Kashmir today, police said.

Ashok Kumar, posted near mini-secretariat (deputy commissioner’s office) in the south Kashmir district, suffered head injury in the attack, a police official said, adding the weapon snatching bid was foiled.

He said Kumar has been taken to a hospital and police have started  investigation.
