Chattabal encounter: Police offers militants to surrender

Srinagar, May 5: Clashes erupted in several areas adjoining Chattabal in Srinagar where an encounter between militants and government forces early on Saturday.

The firefight which razed for the considerable time has stopped for now even as police is making an announcement through public address systems asking militants to surrender.

Reports reaching GNS said that youth took to streets and clashed with the police and Paramilitary CRPF at Noor Bagh, Malik Sahb Safa Kadal, Cement Kadal and near Chattabal.

All these areas are in the immediate periphery of the area where encounter started.

There were no reports about an injury to any person during the clashes which were going on when this report was filed.

At the same time, the firefight has stopped for now and police are making announcements through public address system asking the hiding militants to lay down their arms.

SSP Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray told GNS that the militants are being asked to surrender through loudspeakers.

Earlier, at the crack of the encounter, a paramilitary trooper was injured and was evacuated to army’s 92 base hospital for treatment.

The authorities suspended internet in entire Srinagar district as soon as the gunfight broke out early Wednesday.

The encounter ensued after SOG and CRPF launched a joint cordon-and-search-operation at Gasi Mohalla in Chattabal.
