Baramulla: Boat capsizes in Jhelum, 3 feared dead

Baramulla: Three youth drowned and are feared dead as a boat they were riding capsized in river Jehlum near Uri bus stand in Khanpora area of Baramulla on Tuesday.

However, two other youth, who too were in the same boat, managed to swim to the shore, sources said.

An eyewitness said that the boat collided with the decade’s old huge dredging machine in the river and turned topsy-turvy, throwing all five on board into the river.

While the two made it to the shore, three more, feared to be dead, are yet to be traced, sources said.

Those who made it to shore were identified as Junaid and Azaan, three others, Anzar Wani, Shahid and Tufail of Deewan bagh Baramulla couldn’t be traced and are feared dead.

A police officer confirming the incident said that the rescue operation has been launched to fish out the bodies of three youth.

While scores of people thronged the banks of the river, police, navy and army boats were pressed into service to trace the bodies, sources added.
