APSCC advocates stern punishment for rapists

Srinagar: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has urged judiciary to play a proactive role while dealing with anti-social elements who are involved in a heinous crime like rape. The Committee while demanded exemplary punishment to rapists said that same is necessary for making society free from evils like rape.

In a statement, APSCC Chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said delay in providing justice to the rape victims over the years has emboldened the people who are always on look out to outrage the modesty of girls and women. Raina said that time has come to deliver justice on fast track basis.

“The recent Kathua rape incident could have been avoided had the people at helm been sensitive to the delicate issue of women’s chastity in the country. It is important that we follow footsteps of countries where stringent anti-rape laws are in place. Otherwise, there would be no end to the commission of a heinous crime like rape in India. In such a way we would be left only to scratch our hair,” said APSCC Chairman.

Raina said that in the past, many rape related cases in the state have been put into backburner with the justice being denied to the victims. He said that stern punishment should be awarded to the rapists so that same acts a deterrent for the future and the society is made free from such evils.

“Common masses always look upon the judges as messiahs and as such it is the responsibility of the judiciary to come to the expectations of the general public. Once a rapist is awarded exemplary punishment it is expected that the cases of rape would come down drastically. As such we would hope for a crime free society,” said APSCC Chairman.
