Srinagar, Apr 12: Safina Baig, the wife of Baramulla Lok Sabha member Muzaffar Hussain Baig, was today appointed as the president of the women’s wing of ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

“Mehbooba Mufti, president J&K People’s Democratic Party (JKPDP) has nominated Safina Baig as president women’s wing of the party,” a spokesman for the ruling party said in a statement.

Safina, a brilliant lawyer, has been working for PDP as an unnoticed worker from the beginning, sources said. A successful lawyer, Safina abandoned her practice to be a full time political worker.

Sources said that Safina is strongly connected with the ground particularly in north Kashmir areas of Baramulla, Sangrama, Uri and Karnah.

“She has a strong connect with people,” locals from Baramulla Kandi areas said.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Safina thanked party president, Mehbooba Mufti for the decision saying the Chief Minister thinks a lot for women folk.

“I firmly believe that woman are the worst sufferers of Kashmir turmoil. They lost husbands; they lost children; they lost all male support and had nobody to share their grief,” said Safina.

Asserting that her primary focus would be the negligence of women’s troubles by the society, Safina said: “Whether you like it or not. Women in our Kashmir have been rendered to nothingness. Nobody talks about them. But from today onwards, I am their voice”.

Commenting on Kathua rape and murder case, Safina said that Mehbooba government will ensure that justice is done and law takes its own course.

“The government agencies are dealing with the issue professionally, honestly and in a transparent manner. Justice will be done,” she said.

Ridiculing the attempts to polarize the situation, Safina said, “J&K can’t afford such a polarized atmosphere. We already are facing lots of challenges. Can’t afford polarization.”
