New Delhi, Apr 2 : Palestine hopes that India would play its role of an upholder of human rights and back the side which is just when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a former envoy of the Palestine Liberation Organisation said today.

Ribhi Halloum, who has served as the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s ambassador in various countries, said, “We want the world to see our situation as much as that of the victimisers in this conflict”.

Asked what were the expectations from India, Halloum said, “We hope India, which has been a protector of human rights and justice since its Independence”, will continue to play that basic role.

“India has its own interests, we hope it will be with the just side,” he said.

Amman-based Halloum, also chairman of the Jordanian Associational Committee for Palestine, is part of a delegation of Palestinians that is currently visiting India.

Istanbul-based Mohammad Makram of the Asia Middle East Forum said both India and Palestine share thousands of years of similar culture.

India understands Palestine’s problems, he said during a media interaction at the Press Club of India here.

Bashar Shalabi, chairman of Arab Turkish Center in Istanbul, said, along with Halloum and Makram, he is a member of the Public Conference for Palestinians Abroad, an independent organisation.”
