State Women Commission organizes legal awareness camp at Baramulla

BARAMULLA, MARCH 31: Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women (SCW) today organized a legal awareness camp  highlighting various aspects of women rights and legislations here at Dak Banglow Baramulla.

The programme was organized in collaboration with National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi.

Chairperson SCW Nayeema Mehjoor, District Development Commissioner Baramulla, Dr. Nasir Ahmad Naqash among the other concerned were present in the function. Scores of girl students from different educational institutions of the district, and officers from different departments also attended the camp.

On the occasion, speakers threw light on various legislations including prohibition of domestic violence and harassment of women at work places and said that these acts are in the constitution for safeguarding the women rights. The women present were informed about various women centric and women friendly legislations.

Highlighting the issues confronting women, Nayeema Mehjoor said that dowry-related violence, domestic violence, child abuse, eve teasing are manifestations of various forms of social evils because of  which a woman suffers immensely.

She detailed various provisions of the constitution and legislations by virtue of which they can be redressed.

The Chairperson termed awareness as a necessary tool to safeguard rights of women. She said that education is pivotal for girls so that they can lead a dignified life. She termed discrimination as the main cause for destabilization of social structure.

Speaking on the occasion, the DDC stressed for organizing similar type of camps in rural areas also.  He also said that women have excelled in various fields and the need is to make them aware of their rights and a conducive environment  for development.
