SRINAGAR, MARCH 29: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan today called for maintaining sustaining efforts to curb the polythene menace from all districts in Kashmir.

The Div Com directed the officers to follow innovative and multi pronged approach to end the use of polythene. He was speaking at a meeting convened here today.

The meeting was attended by DC Srinagar and officers from Urban Local Bodies, Pollution Control Board and other departments. The DCs from other districts attended the meeting via video conferencing.

All the DC’s gave a detailed presentation about the quantity of polythene seized, steps taken to curb its use and the progress achieved so far. The meeting was informed that more than 30 quintals of polythene has been seized during the last two months at various places. The Div Com directed the officials to take tough action against the defaulters.

The DC Ganderbal said that the district administration has designed special biodegradable bags that will be given to traders starting from Sonamarg. He said they are also preparing to buy shredders to curb the menace of plastic bottles. DC Baramulla also apprised  that they have installed auto-composter and disintegrator for the treatment of plastic trash and other garbage.

The Div Com appreciated the steps taken by various DC’s and directed the other officials to follow such successful models. He also said that strict vigil should be maintained at all entry checkpoints so that no polythene enters Kashmir.
