Hyderabad, Mar 28 : A local court has sentenced a Rohingya migrant and an Indian national to simple imprisonment for up to two years for the offences of  cheating and forgery after the former managed to get an Aadhaar card by submitting fake documents .

The migrant, Mohammad Taher alias Abu Taher from Myanmar, with the help of B Hemanth, an Indian national, had procured an Aadhaar card illegally by submitting false ID proof and was staying in the city, Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh M Bhagwat said today, adding “this is the first case of conviction of a Rohingya migrant who was illegally staying in the city”.

The XIV Metropolitan Magistrate Court yesterday convicted the two after they were found guilty of charges under relevant IPC sections and under the Foreigners Act, Bhagwat said.

The court sentenced Taher to two years simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,600 on him while Hemanth was awarded one-year simple imprisonment.

According to the police official, Taher migrated to Bangladesh from Myanmar. Then, he entered Kolkata illegally by crossing the border in 2015.

Later, he went to Delhi and shifted to Hyderabad and worked as a labourer.

While in the city, he got acquainted with Hemanth who was working as a supervisor, the Commissioner said.

With Hemanth’s help, Taher procured the Aadhaar card illegally by submitting fake ID proof and obtained a driving licence in Kolkata, he said.

In 2016, Mohammad Taher married a local woman and was since then residing in Hyderabad, he said.

On a tip-off, a police team raided their place in May, 2016 and seized Taher’s Aadhaar card and his driving licence, Bhagwat said.

The Commissioner said Taher and Hemanth were arrested and a charge sheet was filed.

The police official also warned illegal immigrants not to indulge in anti-social activities.

“Over the past two years, 19 criminal cases have been registered against Rohingyas on the charge of cheating, impersonation, human trafficking, attempt to murder etc,” he said.

“So far, 31 Rohingyas have been arrested,” Bhagwat said, adding, there were 3,626 Rohingyas in Rachakonda limits.
