Shami’s contract on hold after wife alleges adultery

New Delhi: The Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the BCCI Wednesday held back Mohammed Shami’s contract after his wife, Hasin Jahan accused him of domestic violence and adultery, which Shami has denied. The fast bowler is a regular in the Indian test and limited-overs teams.

Sources said the Supreme Court-appointed CoA which announced new contracts and compensation packages on behalf of the BCCI for 26 Indian team players Wednesday, will verify facts before taking a call on Shami’s new contract.

“Mohammed Shami’s contract has been held back because of reports coming in today. The CoA does not know the truth of the entire thing and wants to verify this. Somebody can say this is a personal issue and the BCCI contract is entirely professional, but there are certain elements of ethics involved. He is not playing for any club, he is playing for India,” said the source.

Shami’s IPL franchise, Delhi Daredevils, is expected to follow cricket board directives on the issue. “Our thinking is very simple. For us the supreme body is the BCCI. So we will go as per the BCCI’s direction and whatever decisions the BCCI takes, we will sit with them and will agree to those. So I think the direction and guidance will have to come from the BCCI,” Delhi Daredevils CEO Hemant Dua told The Indian Express.

Hasin Jahan posted screenshots of alleged conversations between Shami and other women on her Facebook page. She also shared photos of the fast bowler as “evidence” to support her allegations. She also alleged that Shami’s family members tried to kill her and had tortured her for more than two years.

Shami, who is in Dharamsala playing the Deodhar Trophy, denied the allegations. “Whatever is being said about my personal life is completely false. It’s definitely a part of a big conspiracy against me. This is just an attempt to defame me,” he said on Twitter.

Jahan is expected to take legal action against Shami and his family members. Her advocate Zakir Hussain confirmed the authenticity of the Facebook profile but declined further comment. The Kolkata Police said they were yet to receive a complaint from her.
