Mudslide kills 3 in Lolab; 2 others rescued

Kupwara, Feb 24: Three local hunters were killed and two others were injured after a mudslide triggered by incessant rains hit them at Lashkote forest area of Dardpora, Lolab in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday.

Local witness said that the trio had gone for hunting and came under mudslide this afternoon at Lashkote forest area of Darpora which connects Lolab and Bandipora forest areas.

The slain hunters were identified as Altaf Ahmad Mir, son of Bashir Ahmad Mir; Ghulam Mohammad Lone, son of Ali Mohammad Lone , both residents of Reshwari Warnow village, and Bashir Ahmad Ganai, son of Ghulam Rasool of Dardpora, Lolab.

The two injured persons were identified as  Mohommad Akber Mir, son of Mohammad Subhan Mir, and Zameer Ahmad Khokher, son of Mohammad Syed Khokher, both residents of Warnow. They were rescued by the locals and police, rushed to hospital for treatment.

Reports said that after information regarding the mudslide reached the nearby village, locals joined by police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation to evacuate the trapped hunters.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara Shamsheer Hussain said that after receiving information that mudslide has struck and several people were trapped, a police party joined by locals rushed to the spot to rescue the trapped persons. “Three persons were killed and two others were rescued in injured condition,” SSP said.

He added that the heavy snowfall and rains in the area hampered the rescue operations.
