SC observation on Bihar voter-list revision ‘befitting’ reply; Rahul, Tejashwi must apologise: BJP

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday said the Supreme Court’s observations on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar was a “befitting reply” to the opposition parties and demanded a “public apology” from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav for opposing the exercise.

The apex court on Thursday allowed the Election Commission of India to continue with its special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, calling it a “constitutional mandate”. It also asked the poll panel to consider Aadhaar, Voter ID and ration cards as valid documents during the exercise.

Commenting on the development, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the apex court’s observations made it clear that the SIR is a process to bring transparency and fairness in voting.

The apex court has also made it clear that initiation of a special drive for intensive revision of the electoral rolls comes within the jurisdiction of the Election Commission from a constitutional point of view, he said.

“The Supreme Court’s comment is a befitting reply to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav,” the BJP leader told reporters.

He demanded that Yadav and Gandhi “publicly apologise to the people of India and Bihar”, taking cognisance of the apex court’s observations.

“Will Tejashwi Yadav accept the Supreme Court’s decision (observations) or not?’ he asked.

Bhatia asked Gandhi to explain why he was protesting on the streets of Patna a day before the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear the matter.

“This makes it clear that these leaders have no faith in the Supreme Court,” he charged.

Bhatia asked both Yadav and Gandhi to “introspect” and said, “People will keep giving a befitting reply to those parties and leaders who do not have faith in the constitution and constitutional institutions.”

The BJP leader also attacked the Congress, claiming “internal tussle” in the party over its chief minister’s face in Karnataka, and said, “While people are fed up with the Congress government in the state, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar are happy.”

The people want good governance in Karnataka, but these two leaders only want to enjoy power, he alleged.

“The people of Karnataka are asking today, who will take care of them? One leader wants to continue holding the chair (of chief minister), while the other leader wants to get it (from him),” he said in an apparent reference to Siddaramiah and Shivakumar.

“The kind of dirty politics that the Congress party is doing in Karnataka, the people of the state are suffering. This is very unfortunate,” he added.

No stay asked for by petitioners, SC order to save Bihar voters from disenfranchisement: Cong

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday said the Supreme Court order on pleas challenging the Election Commission’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar makes it clear that “no stay was asked for by any of the petitioners”, and hoped the ruling will save a vast majority of voters from being disenfranchised.

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Election Commission to consider Aadhaar, voter ID and ration cards as valid documents during its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, set to go to polls later this year.

Calling SIR a “constitutional mandate”, Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi considered the submissions of senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the EC, and permitted the poll panel to continue with the exercise in Bihar with over 7 crore voters.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, “Following the Honble Supreme Court’s order that has just come out officially, the Election Commission now has to include the EPIC, Aadhar cards, and Ration Cards in the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar. This will save a vast majority of voters from being disenfranchised,” Ramesh said on X.

“Moreover the EC’s spin on the no stay being given has been clearly exposed. Page 7 of the order makes it clear that no stay was asked for by any of the petitioners yesterday. Such deliberately misleading headline management does not befit a Constitutional authority,” he said.

Hitting back at Ramesh, the BJP accused him of misinterpreting the Supreme Court observations.

“Stop misinterpreting the Supreme Court. The Court has not mandated the acceptance of any additional documents—it has merely said it may consider them. Justice Dhulia clearly stated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is free to record valid reasons for excluding any document. The discretion lies with the ECI,” BJP’s IT department head Amit Malviya said in his post on X.

“Deliberately misrepresenting court observations is dangerous — you could be held in contempt for attributing to the Court what it never said. Just ask Rahul Gandhi, who faced the consequences for a similar offence not long ago,” he said.

Ramesh also tagged screenshots of the court order with his post.

“Since these cases will come up before the appropriate Court prior to August 1, 2025 which is the scheduled date for notification of Draft Electoral Rolls there is no occasion presently to pass any order on the ad interim stay applications, and the petitioners in any case do not press for a stay at this stage,” the order said.

Depending on the reply of the Election Commission the petitioners would always be at liberty to press their plea for stay on the next date of listing, it said.

Terming the right to vote as an important right in a democratic country, the bench said, “We cannot stop a constitutional body from doing what it is supposed to do. Simultaneously, we will not let them do what they are not supposed to do.”

The bench in its order further noted, “After hearing both sides, we are of the opinion that three questions are involved in this case. A, the very powers of the EC to undertake the exercise, B, the procedure and the manner in which the exercise is being undertaken, and C, the timing, including the timings given for preparation of draft electoral rolls, asking objections and making the final electoral roll, etcetera, which is very short, considering the fact that Bihar election are due in November 2025.”

Underlining the need to hear the matter, the bench posted over 10 petitions challenging the drive on July 28.

The poll panel in the meantime was directed to file its response within a week following which the rejoinder from the petitioners could be filed a week thereafter.

The bench took on record the poll panel’s statement that the list of 11 documents it had to consider for SIR was not exhaustive.

“Therefore, in our view, since the list is not exhaustive, it would be in the interest of justice if the ECI will also consider the following three documents, such as Aadhaar card, voter ID card, and ration card,” the bench ordered.

The poll panel, represented by senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi and senior advocates K K Venugopal and Maninder Singh, however, objected to this part of the order.

“We are not saying you have to. It is up to you to consider. We are saying it looks that way. They are genuine. If you have a good reason to discard then discard it. But give reasons,” Justice Dhulia remarked.

Bengali citizens harassed during drive to identify illegal migrants: CPI(M) leaders write to Shah

New Delhi:  CPI(M) leaders Brinda Karat and Anurag Saxena on Friday wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah, and said they have received several complaints of “harassment of genuine citizens” during the ongoing exercise for “identification of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” on grounds that they speak Bengali.

In a letter addressed to the home minister, the CPI(M) leaders said they heard complaints of human rights violations, harassment and extortion.

Karat, a former MP and special invitee to CPI(M) Politburo, and Saxena, Delhi state secretary of the party, said they, along with a team, visited Delhi’s Bawana JJ colony and met several of the complainants.

“We were shocked to find blatant violation of minimum human rights, harassment and in some cases, corruption amounting to extortion,” the CPI(M) leaders alleged.

They noted that the exercise was being carried out by Delhi Police and several other agencies under directions from the Union Home Ministry.

Listing out the cases, they gave cited the story of one Md Nizamuddin who said he was from Godda district, Jharkhand, and had migrated to Delhi several decades ago.

“He was allotted a plot by DDA in 2004 in Bawana JJ colony and presently resides there. On July 5, a team of police personnel from the local thana went to his house and accused him of helping a Bangladeshi to get illegal papers.

“He explained to the police that the tenant was staying there three years ago and he had no contact and had no idea of the person’s whereabouts,” the CPI(M) leaders said.

They said he was taken to the police station again on July 6, and also allegedly beaten up. While he was released later, the CPI(M) leaders said they were told photographs of the family had been uploaded on a police site.

“All such photos should be deleted from police records as the family are bonafide Indian citizens who have committed no crime. Also, action should be taken against those who beat Nizamuddin in custody,” they said.

The letter also gave the example of one Sajan Saudagar Das from the jhuggi settlement in Bawana C block, who was picked up by the police on May 6 and taken to Pritampura thana. The CPI(M) leaders alleged he was badly beaten by two policemen who abused him saying that he should “confess” that he was a Bangladeshi.

They added that the police later said he was picked up “by mistake”, and had picked him up as they received information that he was speaking in Bengali, the CPI(M) leaders said.

Another example cited by the leaders mentioned three women aged between 60 and 70 years who came to India as children, got married and have families here.

The letter also gave examples from Vivekanand camp in Chanakyapuri, where they alleged police took away ID documents from Bengalis and were returned later after intervention by some activists.

“The process of identification of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in the capital of India is an example of violation of minimum human rights. In the process, genuine Indian citizens are being targeted on grounds of language and religion. Is it now a crime in India to speak Bengali?” the CPI(M) leaders questioned.

“Further, are all Bengali speaking Muslim citizens of India to be treated as criminals and illegal immigrants? We would like to remind you that 26 per cent of the population of West Bengal are Bengali speaking Muslims.” they said.

The CPI(M) leaders also said there are international norms for deportation of illegal immigrants. “The present methods of identification in Delhi violate all such norms,” they added.

BJP making attempts to hijack elections in Bihar as it did in Maharashtra, alleges Rahul Gandhi

Bhubaneswar:  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the BJP of making attempts to “hijack upcoming elections in Bihar, as it did in Maharashtra”.

Addressing the party’s ‘Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh’ here, Gandhi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, said the INDIA bloc parties have decided to prevent the BJP from “hijacking” the Bihar assembly polls.

“Like Maharashtra, attempts are being made to hijack the elections in Bihar. The BJP is attacking our Constitution across the country,” Gandhi alleged.

During an INDIA bloc meeting held on Thursday, it was decided to “prevent the BJP from hijacking the elections in Bihar” where assembly polls are due later this year, he claimed.

He also accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of “not doing its duty but working for the interest of the BJP”.

Gandhi also alleged, “The BJP runs the government for five to sin capitalists. It does not work for the common people of the country.”

Stating that the ‘Jal, Jangal, Jamin’ (water, forest and land) belongs to the tribals and will remain for them, Gandhi claimed that Odisha’s BJP government has “not implemented” the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996.

“Forest rights pattas are not provided to the tribals. The Congress has brought the PESA and Tribal Bill. We will enforce these laws and ensure the tribals get their land,” Gandhi said.

He alleged, “Odisha is being looted by the BJP government, similar to what the BJD did during its tenure.”

  • Indian women eye strong finish after sealing maiden T20I series win over England

Indian women eye strong finish after sealing maiden T20I series win over England

Birmingham:  With the series already in bag, a confident India will look to further assert their dominance and end the five-match women’s T20I rubber on a high when they face England in the inconsequential fifth and final game here on Saturday.

While the bat and ball did the talking in the initial games, it was India’s electric fielding that stood out in the fourth T20I, helping them seal a historic maiden series win over England in the shortest format.

Arundhati Reddy’s three sharp catches in the deep and Radha Yadav’s brilliance in the field helped India restrict England to 126 for 7, setting up a six-wicket win and a decisive 3-1 lead.

The victory not only marked India’s first T20I series triumph over England but also provided a morale-boosting edge ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series.

A win in the final game would give Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. a commanding 4-1 result and dent England’s confidence going forward.

The Indian men’s team had produced a memorable victory at Edgbaston last week in the second Test, and the women’s side will be keen to keep the winning momentum going at the same venue.

India’s bowling attack, built around four spinners and two seamers, has paid rich dividends as the England batters have visibly struggled against spin, losing 22 wickets to spinners so far in the series.

While Radha Yadav emerged as the Player of the Match for her two wickets and fielding exploits, it is young N Shree Charani who emerged as the leading wicket-taker after making her T20I debut at the start of this series.

With the most successful spinner in women’s T20Is Deepti Sharma anchoring the attack, India’s spin dominance has been hard to counter.

In the batting department, Smriti Mandhana has been the top scorer, while Shafali Verma’s aggressive approach has given India rapid starts.

Her 19-ball 31 in the fourth T20I set the tone for the chase and helped her earn a recall to the ODI squad for India A’s tour of Australia.

Shafali, however, will be eager to convert her starts into more substantial contributions.

Jemimah Rodrigues, with 107 runs in the series, has been a steady presence in the middle order and hit the winning runs in the previous match. Harmanpreet, despite a 48-run stand with Rodrigues, looked short of her best and will aim to fine-tune her game before the ODI leg.

For England, the absence of skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, ruled out with a left groin injury after the second T20I, has hurt their balance.

Their batting has lacked direction, with Sophia Dunkley the only batter showing any consistency.

Openers Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge have failed to provide solid starts, and the middle-order has not stepped up either. A total of 126 was never going to trouble India’s powerful batting unit.

In the bowling department, pacer Lauren Bell has stood out with six wickets, but apart from her, no other bowler has been able to stop the Indian batting line-up, with the next best being Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Filer with just three wickets each.

  • Amid fierce criticism, Dukes ball maker open to changes, to expand presence in India

London: The Dukes ball has copped plenty of criticism from the players in the ongoing India-England Test series but its owner Dilip Jajodia wants the “superstars of the game” to show more patience and be more reasonable in their approach towards the controversial subject.

Speaking to Jajodia on the sidelines of the third Test, said his company with history dating back to the 18th century is open to making improvements on the ball keeping in mind the unusually hot weather in the UK and demands of the modern game where batters are pounding the ball with rather heavy bats.

The Dukes was changed twice in the morning session on day three of the Lord’s Test here. After getting a 10-over ball changed, the Indian players remained extremely unhappy leading to another change in a matter of minutes.

“There are only three recognized manufacturers in world cricket (Dukes, SG and Kookaburra). It’s not easy (making a cricket ball). And if it was easy, there’d be hundreds and hundreds of manufacturers around the world.

“So I think the players need to realize that we are not sitting back doing nothing. We’re trying our best. And if there’s an issue, it will be reviewed and we look at it and see where the problem is, whether it is a fault with the leather or there’s a fault with something else. We will look into it. I’m not sitting around with my feet up smoking a cigar,” Jajodia said.

“The players can criticise my cricket ball. Can I criticise them for the bad shot or the bad ball? Long hop. You know what I mean? You’ve got to be sensible.”

Ahead of the Test, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant had expressed frustration at the ball going soft and out of shape so frequently. Former England pacer Stuart Broad, who took majority of his 604 Test wickets with the Dukes, too has spoken against the fast deteriorating ball.

“The superstars can argue. They’re the paymasters. I have to produce what they want. That’s all I can say to that. It’s very easy (to criticise).

“And people should be careful that when they make this criticism, it’s not just criticising me or my ball. There are a lot of people behind me. Jobs are at stake. So we have to be careful. Always be careful, be generous,” cautioned Jajodia.

Why is the Dukes getting out of shape so often?           ==================================

Jajodia spoke about a number of factors that may have contributed to the ball getting soft and out of shape rather quickly.

“Weather is quite a major factor, playing conditions, the type of cricket being played, the type of bats being used, the strength of the players. You have to accept that there are changes.

“The bats are very powerful. The ball is hitting outside the boundary hard objects from time to time. And when you look at a ball, it’s a miracle that it lasts 80 overs.

“And if these changes need adaptation, then that is something that the authorities have to consider.”

Has Jajodia spoken to the ECB on the issue?

    ================================

The Dukes ball owner replied in negative.

“No, there is no gut reaction and knee jerk reaction. We’re in the middle of a Test series. With the greatest respect, there have been two results in the last game where India won the match.

“Captain Gill scored more runs than any other Indian has. Two bowlers got six wickets. So all I can say is, I’m sorry about the inconvenience, but at least you’re playing cricket,” said a straight shooting Jajodia.

Dukes to ramp up presence in India, in talks with BCCI

    ========================================

The SG Test ball is used in India, both at the domestic level and international games. Jajodia feels a huge cricket playing country India needs more ball options and his company will be expanding its presence to cater the needs of the growing market.

At the moment, the company has a presence in Meerut but all its balls are finished in the UK. That is set to change with Jajodia registering an office in India on his visit Bangalore last week. He also met the BCCI officials who are testing the ball. Veteran administrator Brijesh Patel will be the head of Dukes’ India operations.

“I was just buying balls from Meerut and finishing them here. But now we’re going to finish them in India as well. We are ramping our presence up because we believe that India now, the time is right. I mean, the economy, the amount of enthusiasm, the facilities that BCCI are putting into cricket, the facility in Bangalore.

“And frankly, when you see that facility and the investment and the grounds and everything, India will be a powerhouse for years. I have spoken to the BCCI officials, they are testing the balls,” he said when asked if Dukes could replace SG in the Indian cricket ecosystem.

“The BCCI wants competition. I mean, it’s sensible. You can’t have a monopoly. There is fundamentally a monopoly (of SG), a lot of manufacturers, but there’s one major business. I don’t need to mention names.”

His vision for the Indian market?

    =======================

“I am not just wanting the top level. Because when you talk about top level you talk about state cricket and you talk about the leagues in the states, they all want a better ball. But they’re all wanting a ball for 400 rupees. That can’t happen. You need to pay more for better quality,” he added.

  • Karun, Prasidh, Mayank among retained players as KSCA T20 goes behind doors this season

Bengaluru: Top state cricketers such as Karun Nair, Prasidh Krishna, and Mayank Agarwal were among the retained players ahead of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20’s fourth edition which will be played behind closed doors between August 11 and 27.

Spectators will not be allowed in the stands for this iteration of the tournament after 11 people were killed in a stampede after Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced a victory parade to celebrate their maiden IPL victory on June 4.

Subsequently, A Shankar and ES Jairam, secretary and treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, resigned taking moral responsibility of the tragic incident.

The judicial proceedings have been going on in the state High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) pertaining to the stampede.

Cutting back to the competition, Mysore Warriors will once again count on their captain Nair, who was last season’s top scorer with 560 runs, to lead the charge.

Young batting sensation Karthik SU, who stood out last season with 372 runs in 12 innings, including three half-centuries, will join him in the top-order.

Indian pacer Prasidh along with seasoned all-rounder Karthik CA round off a strong core of Warriors.

Bengaluru Blasters, last season’s runners-up, will continue to bank on the experience of opener Agarawal.

The Hubli Tigers will look to wicketkeeper KL Shrijith, who was in Mumbai Indians’ roster in IPL 2025, to provide firepower at the top after his impressive 349-run campaign last year, which included an unbeaten century.

For Gulbarga Mystics, captain and premier pacer Vyshak Vijaykumar returns to the fray, while the top order will feature Smaran R and wicketkeeper-batter Luvnith Sisodia.

Shivamogga Lions have retained right-arm pacer Vasuki Koushik, who has moved to Goa for this season’s domestic competitions.

The player auction is scheduled for July 15 where each team will build their squads with a minimum of 16 players and no more than 18 players, excluding two mandatory picks from their respective catchment areas.

All the matches will be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as six teams — Mysore Warriors, runners-up Bengaluru Blasters, Hubli Tigers, Gulbarga Mystics, Shivamogga Lions, and Mangaluru Dragons — will vie for top honours.

  • Centre extends Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan’s tenure till Aug 22 next year

Centre extends Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan’s tenure till Aug 22 next year

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) The Centre on Friday extended the tenure of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan till August 22 next year, according to an official order.

The extension comes at a time when the country is preparing for the mega census with caste enumeration and amid the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA’s) resolve to end Naxalism by March next year.

India’s 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027, with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country.

Mohan, a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Sikkim cadre, was named the Union Home Secretary in August 2024. He took over the charge from Ajay Kumar Bhalla on completion of his tenure on August 22 last year.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Mohan’s extension in services as Home Secretary beyond the date of his superannuation on September 30 up to August 22, 2026 or until further orders, in terms of the provisions of Fundamental Rules or FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, said the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel.

The rules have provisions to extend the services of such officers.

With this extension, Mohan will have two years’ tenure on the crucial post mandated with mainly ensuring internal security matters among others.

He was serving as the Union Culture Secretary before being named as the Home Secretary.

A seasoned bureaucrat, Mohan was also the government’s key officer during the COVID-19 pandemic and was tasked with overseeing the implementation of decisions taken for various protocols and ensuring smooth coordination with the states.

  • Switzerland greenlights India-EFTA mega trade pact; sets stage for October rollout

New Delhi: Switzerland has finally completed the ratification process  for a landmark trade deal between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) that would reduce trade barriers and significantly open up the Indian market to Swiss exports.

Swiss Ambassador to India Maya Tissafi described Switzerland’s ratification of the trade pact as a “significant milestone” in her country’s bilateral relationship with New Delhi.

The envoy told PTI that the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) is expected to come into force in October.

Under the mega trade pact, the EFTA States of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are looking at making an investment of USD 100 billion in India over the next 15 years.

Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway have already ratified the trade deal.

In March, the four-nation European grouping signed the TEPA with India following nearly 16 years of negotiations.

“At midnight yesterday (Swiss time), the referendum deadline for the EFTA-India TEPA officially expired. With no referendum, the Swiss people have expressed their tacit approval of the agreement,” Tissafi said in a social media post.

Switzerland’s ratification of the trade pact came more than seven months after the Swiss Council of States approved it.

“The TEPA paves the way for long-term cooperation between our countries. Apart from reduced tariffs, it will help streamline customs procedures, enhance intellectual property protections and establish a framework for sustainable trade practices,” Tissafi told PTI.

Most importantly, the EFTA states will invest USD 100 billion and create one million (10 lakh) jobs in India over 15 years, she said, adding that this will be a “win-win situation” for all countries involved.

Currently, Switzerland is the 12th-largest investor in India.

Swiss investments in India have grown exponentially over the last 25 years, rising from CHF 551 million (approximately Rs 5,935 crore) in 2000 to CHF 10 billion (Rs 1,07,736 crore) in 2024, the envoy said.

“The TEPA is expected to enter into force in October, date upon which the agreement will be effective. Of course, in the specific domain of trade in goods, some categories of products will be subject to progressive dismantling periods, spanning over 10 years in some cases,” she added.

Tissafi said the Swiss government’s priority would be to successfully implement the TEPA for the Swiss companies that want to invest in India.

“To this end, we are partnering with business associations in Switzerland and India and with Indian authorities at the central and state levels. The opening of the EFTA Desk in February is one measure that facilitates investments from EFTA countries in India,” she said.

More than 330 Swiss companies are present in India in sectors such as engineering, services, precision instruments, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, while Indian companies are present in Switzerland in sectors such as IT, pharmaceuticals and machinery.

On the overall India-Switzerland ties, Tissafi said the bilateral relations have evolved over the last 77 years, since the two countries signed the Treaty of Friendship.

“Our multi-sectoral cooperation covers diverse areas, including diplomacy, economy, trade and investment, education, research and innovation, skills development, vocational education and training, development, climate change and disaster-risk reduction, and culture. This relationship has been reinforced over the years through regular high-level visits,” she said.

The relationship between the two countries is on an upward trajectory, the envoy said, adding that they are making strides in various domains, from the signing of the TEPA last March to the implementing of projects in the fields of climate change, disaster-risk reduction and environment.

“The TEPA underscores our commitment to enhancing trade and economic ties between our two nations. Another notable advancement in our partnership is also the launch of the Swiss-Indian Innovation Platform in Bengaluru in October 2023,” she said.

The platform connects Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Swiss technical high schools and universities with leading private companies from both countries to foster strategic innovation partnerships.

Swiss companies have been operating in India in the machine, electrical engineering and metals (MEM) and precision sectors, as well as in services, information, communication, software, medtech and construction, among other sectors.

  • ‘Operations on to track 40-50 terrorists active in Jammu region’

‘Operations on to track 40-50 terrorists active in Jammu region’

Nagrota (Jammu): The security situation in the hinterland and along the borders of the Jammu region remains peaceful and under control, with the security forces maintaining a strong vigil and dominating the higher reaches of key areas through a series of operations aimed at tracking down 40 to 50 terrorists active in the region, official sources said.

Multi-tier measures, including an anti-drone strategy, additional deployments and a focus on intensified night operations, have been put in place to keep the terrorists on their toes, they said.

According to the sources, around 40 to 50 terrorists operating in multiple groups are currently active south of the Pir Panjal range. “Nearly 80 percent of them are Pakistani nationals,” a source said, citing earlier intelligence assessments and ongoing ground reports.

A series of counter-terror operations is underway in districts including Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Doda and Udhampur, they said. “We are acting on specific inputs regarding terrorist movements. They are being tracked and are on the run,” said the sources familiar with the ongoing operations.

The operations are focused on the hinterlands of Kishtwar, Basantgarh, Rajouri and Poonch, with ground-level intelligence playing a critical role in directing troop movements.

Security has been significantly stepped up, with reinforcements deployed across high-sensitivity areas and higher reaches in the region. “Higher reaches in the region have been brought under the effective control of forces and are being fully dominated. Night surveillance has been intensified using night vision devices and other modern equipment,” a source said.

Routes previously exploited by terrorists to enter the Kashmir valley have been plugged and preventive measures are in place to block infiltration attempts. “Cross-border activity continues and reports suggest that terrorists are being staged along the border. However, our troops are fully alert to foil any such design,” the source added.

The anti-terror strategy has been revised with increased emphasis on night operations and tactics aimed at denying terrorists the opportunity to regroup or seek shelter and carry out night movement in the hill ranges.

However, the sources maintained that there are no credible reports suggesting that Pakistani regulars are operating alongside terrorist ranks as of now.

The sources also cited a recent encounter in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar, where a terrorist group was caught off guard by Army personnel already dominating a strategic hilly area. The militants retaliated by hurling a grenade at the troops, confirming their growing unease in operating in the high-altitude belts now under tight surveillance.

“We are tightening the noose. They are finding it increasingly difficult to move and we will hunt them down, sooner or later,” the sources said.

Dozens of attacks, operations and encounters have been witnessed in several hilly districts of the Jammu region during the past three years resulting in casualties to troops.
