Cloudburst wreaks havoc in Sopore villages

Sopore, Jul 15: Dozens of residential houses suffered damages as rain and strong winds besides a cloudburst hit several villages of Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district early Monday evening.

Locals told ‘Kashmir Images’ that the rain and winds wreaked havoc in Duroo, Hardushiva, Mundji, Warpora and other villages of Zaingair area of Sopore.

“Soon after the rainfall stopped, the water entered into dozens of residential houses and many families had to be shifted to safer places,” the locals said.

“The destruction can be seen everywhere in my village,” said Ghulam Mohiudin Ganaie of Duroo, whose house was completely damaged after a poplar tree fell on it.

“The epicentre of the cloudburst was our village. The rain fury continued for one hour which not only damaged houses but roads of the village, and several electric transformers were also damaged. Many electric poles were uprooted at various places in our village,” said Showkat Ahmad, a resident of Hardshiva.

Meanwhile, the cloudburst caused flood-like situation as Zainagir canal passing through many villages swelled up with flood water.

When contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, Ashiq Hussain Lilly, said: “We have already received the reports of cloudburst in Zainagir area. We will be sending teams to the affected villages to assess the losses so that government can compensate them.”

Reports from Tral area of Pulwama district also said that heavy rains followed by windstorm damaged scores of vehicles and other belongings in Dadsara area of Tral.
