Sopore, April 03: The students of Government Primary School Lalad are unable to take part in the sports related activities as the front yard of the school remains submerged in the water throughout the academic year.

Located on Sopore-Baramulla road, the school was established in 2004 under centrally sponsored scheme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and since then the concerned higher authorities have not paid a single visit to the school.

Talking to Kashmir Images, the students of Primary School said that the pool of water is of no use for them. “The front yard of our school turns into a pool of water after ever rainfall. We need a playground to play games, not a pool of water,” they added.

The school has an enrollment of 10 students from 1st primary to 5th class with the staff strength of a single teacher.

“Every year, the rain water accumulates in the school front yard and the situation remains the same for more than four months,” said a teacher posted at the school. The teacher also blamed the Roads and Building (R&B) department and Block Development office Sopore for the issue. “The R&B and BDO officials have failed to repair the pipe lying beneath the surface of the road which also leads to submergence of the school premises,” he added.

According to the locals, the school is surrounded by more than 10 kanals of land but sadly the enrolled students don’t get any chance to take part in extra-curriculum activities.

Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Sopore, Fehmeeda Jan, told Kashmir Images that she visited the school recently and has assessed the situation. “I will be writing to higher education, R&B and Block Development officials requesting to take necessary action for solving the issue,” said Jan.

Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla, Ghulam Mohammad Lone, said that they have forwarded the proposal for carrying out the earth filling work of Primary School Lalad to Youth Services and Sports Department. “I hope they will start the work as soon as possible,” he added.
