Srinagar, Jan 26: Two militants were killed in an encounter with government forces on Saturday in Khunmoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar city, police said.
Government forces launched a cordon and search operation following information about presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
He said the search turned into a gun-battle after militants opened firing on government forces.
Two militants were killed in the operation, the official said adding their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter but their identity and group affiliation is still being ascertained.
“We are sanitizing the area so it will take some time,” a police officer said.
“Two AK- 47 rifles and lot of ammunition was recovered from their possession,” he said, adding that “they were planning to sabotage R-day functions.”
Meanwhile a police spokesman asked people not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.
“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” he said.
