Srinagar, January 24: Stating that India had no right to celebrate Republic Day in Jammu Kashmir, All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, has maintained that it was on the basis of its military might that India had ‘occupied’ Kashmir.

In a press release issued here, Geelani said that the tall claims of Inida about being the large democracy were exposed by its trampling of all basic and fundamental rights of people of Kashmir since last seven decades. “The very existence of this kind of ruthless state-craft has resulted in gross violations of human rights in the every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir. People are left at the mercy of occupational military regime, which kills common people in the broad day light and in the custody, showers of bullets and pellets on the peaceful protest marches, leaving thousands of people, irrespective of gender and age, maimed, disabled, blind and half dead, has become a routine matter,” Geelani was quoted as saying.

Stating that he had no animosity with India or its people and that they had every right to celebrate their Republic Day within its states, Geelani added that India had ‘no moral and legal’ right to celebrate the same on the surface of Jammu and Kashmir – the world recognized disputed land.

Hurriyat chairman while referring to UN charter said that “they guarantee the basic and fundamental rights and this institution has obviously called to seek the people’s verdict through plebiscite and has asked to ascertain their wish with regards to political destiny of state and even India in its pledge has confirmed to honour and seek the people’s verdict through plebiscite,” Geelani has said while adding that despite being signatory to these resolutions, India had backtracked from its commitment.

Geelani also asked people including students, their parents and teachers to stay away from all such celebrations and appealed them to realize their obligations towards the ‘nation’.

Meanwhile Geelani also paid glowing tributes to the militants slain in Baramulla gunfight and said that the youth were sacrificing their precious lives for a greater cause to serve the nation and the leadership was duty-bound to carry their mission to its logical end.

Referring to the Handwara and Kupwara massacres, Geelani said that Indian ‘occupational forces’ had left their ‘brutal footprints’ in every nook and corner of the state and added that such brutal use of force on peaceful protests was unheard of in history.
