Rajouri, Jan 23:  A resident of Poonch district was arrested for allegedly murdering his sister-in-law, police said Wednesday.

Liyaqat Hussain of Kunaiyan village, who had lodged a missing report about his sister-in-law, turned out to be his murderer, police said, adding that he has been arrested after he confessed to the murder.

Police said Hussain lodged a missing report on December 19 in which he stated that his sister-in-law (elder brother’s wife) Shakeela Bi had gone missing after she left for Poonch city from her home a day before.

The woman’s husband works in the Middle East.

The complainant approached the police a day later again saying he had discovered the throat-slit body of his sister-in-law, said the police official.

“Soon after this information was received, police teams reached at the spot and recovered the body from the forest area as mentioned by the complainant,” said the official, adding that a case of murder (vide FIR no 222/2018) under sections 302 RPC, 4/25 Arms Act was registered at Poonch police station.

During the investigation, the official said, the police checked the call history of the cellphone of the deceased. It came to fore that the complainant had called her multiple times on the day she went missing, he said.

“We got suspicious after checking the call records and investigated the complainant and it was found that he is a notorious criminal booked in four cases,” said the official.

The complainant, he said, was detained and questioned during which he broke down and confessed to his involvement in the crime.

On his disclosure police recovered his blood stained jeans pants and socks which he wore at the time of the murder.
