Jammu Gondola leaves two dead, four injured

Jammu, January 20: Two labourers died while four others sustained injuries on Sunday evening during a trial run conducted at Jammu cable car.

Days ahead of its scheduled inauguration by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, a rescue trolley fell down near Mahamaya Mandir during a trial run killing two labourers and injuring four others who were shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) for treatment.

Reports said that the trolley in which around six labourers were on way to Mahamaya Temple from Peerkho area suddenly fell down due to some technical snag.

The victims were identified as Manjeet Singh (50) S/O Jaswant Singh of Uttar Pradesh, Balkeet Singh (32) S/O Tarjeet Singh of Trikuta Nagar, Ravinder (30) S/O Kuldeep Singh of Uttar Pradesh and Manjeet Singh (32) S/O Kuldeep of West Bengal.

In a late night communiqué, Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the loss of lives in the mishap and described the incident as ‘tragic and unfortunate’. Malik also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the Next of Kin of those killed in the mishap and directed the divisional administration to provide free of cost medical treatment to the injured.

The Governor has ordered a magisterial inquiry to be conducted to know the causes of the incident.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of the Governor, Advisor Khurshid Ahmed Ganai and Chief Secretary B V R Subramanyam visited the injured in the Hospital late this evening and wished them a speedy recovery.

The Chief Secretary also visited the accident site and took stock of the situation. He directed the Police to sanitise the entire area to prevent any further mishap.

Dr Farooq, Omar express grief over Jammu Gondola mishap

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah on Sunday expressed grief over the death of two persons in Jammu Gondola trial run mishap at Mahamaya and described the incident as most tragic and unfortunate.

In a statement issued here they conveyed their condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for peace to the departed souls and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
