Srinagar, Jan 19: Government forces on Saturday conducted a mock-drill in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar city as part of the beefed up security in the city ahead of the Republic Day following a series of grenade attacks on security establishments recently.

Government forces on Saturday conducted a mock-drill in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar city to check their “alertness” ahead of R-Day.

The mock-drill was conducted by a joint team of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary CRPF near the historic Clock Tower in Lal Chowk.

The forces used drones mounted with cameras, carried out searches of the buildings and frisked pedestrians in the commercial hub, witnesses said.

The operation was carried out just a day after suspected militants lobbed a grenade at a CRPF party in the area.

“Security measures have been put in place to ensure the Republic Day passes off peacefully,” the officials said.

They said security has been beefed up in Srinagar especially in the wake of recent grenade attacks in the city.

“Security forces have been asked to remain alert and more check-points have been erected and vehicles entering the city were being checked randomly,” the officials said.

They said a security cordon has been put in place around Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium here – the main venue for the January 26 function.

The traffic movement has been restricted near the stadium from Saturday till January 26, the officials said.
