The attack took place less than 100 metres from the National Conference headquarters and the local office of All India Radio.

Sources said that police personnel including an ASI and two other cops of the Traffic wing deployed for routine duties in the area sustained splinter injuries in the blast.

The injured cops were identified as ASI Iqbal Singh of 14 Battalion JKAP, Head Constables Manzoor Ahmad and Sanaullah from Traffic Police and a Special Police Officer (SPO) Haris Ahmad.

All the injured were immediately evacuated to the hospital, where ASI Iqbal Singh is being treated for splinter injuries to both of his legs. Manzoor Ahmad has injury in the neck and Sanaullah in the leg while SPO Haris Ahmad suffered minor injuries in the blast.

Soon after the attack, the government forces cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to nab the attackers.

Meanwhile, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group claimed responsibility of the grenade attack.

A JeM spokesperson Muhammad Hassan in a statement claimed that two government forces’ personnel “were killed and six critically injured in the attack”, news agency GNS quoted him as having said.

Today’s is the second grenade attack in a recent past as the militants had lobbed a grenade on paramilitary CRPF bunker at city centre Lal Chowk last week – though there was no loss of life or the injury in that attack.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ismail Parray while confirming the incident said a formal case has been registered into the incident and investigations set into motion.
