Sopore shuts to mourn 1993 killings

Sopore, January 06: A complete shutdown was observed in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Sunday to pay tribute to more than 60 civilians killed by the government forces on this day in 1993.

According to local reports, all shops and other business establishments remain closed while as the private and public transport remained off road.

Hundreds of residents offered congregational prayers for the slain civilians at the local mosques in the town.

Meanwhile, members of the Civil Society Sopore and Traders Federation gathered at martyrs graveyard Sopore and offered prayers for the victims of 1993 massacre.

On the fateful day of January 6, 1993, the personnel of Border Security Force (BSF) had gone berserk after an unknown person allegedly snatched a riffle from a soldier.

In the immediate aftermath, the BSF party killed more than 60 civilians while razing over 400 structures including residential houses and shops to the ground in the town.
