Kupwara: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was killed and another army soldier was critically injured in a sniper attack by Pakistan army along the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday late afternoon.

Official sources said that violating ceasefire agreement, Pakistan opened the sniper fire upon the army’s 2/8 GR posts in Jumgund area along the LoC.

Two army officers suffered serious injuries in the attack and the injured were immediately evacuated to military hospital Drugmulla where Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Subidar Gamar Thapa (42) succumbed to injuries, they said.

The injured has been identified as Junior Commissioned officer (JCO) Subidar Raman Thapa and was later referred to army’s 92 base hospitals Badamibagh Srinagar for advanced treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar also confirmed the death of the JCO and injuries to another.

According to reports, Pakistan started firing at Indian posts at 1:00am on Tuesday killing the Army officer. Reports say the official was hit by a sniper fire from the Pakistani side when he came out of his bunker. Indian forces have been giving a befitting reply to Pakistani firing at the border. There has been a considerable rise in ceasefire violation at the LoC by Pakistan in the recent past.

Earlier this month, Indian had summoned Pakistan High Commissioner and lodged a strong protest over ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir after six civilians, including a woman, were killed. However, during the meeting Basit remained defiant and blamed India of violating the ceasefire for over 70 times.
