Awareness camp organized for sheep breeders at Bandipora

BANDIPORA, DECEMBER 10: Sheep Husbandry Department Bandipora on Monday organized a day-long awareness cum capacity building camp for sheep breeders.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Zahoor Ahmad Mir who was the chief guest on the occasion apprised the sheep breeders about the employment potential of sheep sector in tackling the problem of unemployment.

He said a large section of population of rural areas of the state are directly or indirectly involved in livestock farming. He said this sector is emerging as important growth leverage to State economy and its share to Gross State Domestic Products is also increasing.

While suggesting the educated unemployed youth of the State to invest in the livestock farming, Mir said this sector is a major employment generating sector if adopted by the youth. He said the state has a huge demand of mutton in the State and the production is low due to which the State has to import the sheep from other neighboring States.

He said the youth have a golden opportunity to fill the market with local meat that will not only help the State to be self sufficient but will also provide more job avenues to the youth. He said there are several State and centrally sponsored schemes under which the government can facilitate the youth of the state to start their units.

Mir directed the concerned officials to organize more such awareness camps for the existing sheep breeders so that that they can keep their livestock healthy besides getting optimum benefits from the people-friendly schemes launched by the government.

District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Dr Basharat Amin Kathoo conducted a detailed interaction with the sheep breeders and assured them of their possible support of Sheep Husbandry Department.

During the program resource persons including Dr Nuzhat Wali and Dr Umar, Veterinary Assistant Surgeons gave a detailed presentation about various  disease found in sheep and the measures to be taken to prevent these diseases besides explaining a detailed schedule of vaccination and dosing. They also interacted with the sheep farmers and answered their questions and queries.
